A Doorway To Abu Dhabi.

Motion graphics for a Trip Advisor installation, working with Polar Media. Real customer reviews animated onto 360 footage of Abu Dhabi, projected inside a dome in a French shopping centre so visitors could stand inside the city.

Challenge

(01)

Putting graphics into 360 footage that had to hold up on the inside of a dome.

The piece was built for a dome projection, so the viewer stands inside the image with no frame edge and nowhere for a graphic to sit safely. The source was 360 footage of Abu Dhabi, which meant the review graphics could not simply be laid over the top. They had to be placed in the unwrapped footage, tracked to the camera so they stayed with the scene as it moved, and then rewrapped so everything held up once the footage was back in its 360 state. Any drift in the track becomes obvious at that scale.

Solution

(02)

Unwrap, place, track, rewrap.

Working with Polar Media, I took the supplied 360 footage and unwrapped it so the graphics could be positioned in a flat space. Real Trip Advisor reviews were animated to drop down into view at the right points in each scene, motion tracked so they stayed locked to the environment as the camera moved. The whole thing was then rewrapped to sit correctly on the original 360 footage. Testing in VR was part of the process, since the only way to know whether a graphic sits comfortably in a 360 space is to stand inside it.

Conclusion

(03)

Standing inside Abu Dhabi in a shopping centre in France.

The finished piece ran as a dome projection, with visitors walking in and finding themselves inside Abu Dhabi, reviews from real travellers appearing around them as they looked. The graphics read as a layer over the environment rather than part of it, which is right for reviews, but the tracking is what keeps that layer consistent against the scene. Without it they would slide every time the camera moved, and at dome scale that is the difference between a comfortable experience and an uncomfortable one.
